Businesses need to proactively manage change, instead of struggling to keep up. Our Enterprise Modernization story focuses on helping customers save
today and build a smarter foundation for future investments. We focus on 4 primary focus areas Applications, People, Teams and Infrastructure to achieve the optimal business value in today’s tough economic climate.
- Applications are all about how you can be smart in maintaining and extending the applications that run your business
- People focuses on the employees who build the applications. We have smart people. How can we help them deliver their best work?
- Team is about smart ways for the people to work together to build high quality applications in a timely manner, especially in today’s geographically dispersed world.
- Infrastructure is the other area that focuses on how customers can get the most out of the infrastructure they already have. Given today’s challenging economic times, customers are not interested in rip & replace, it is all about leveraging what they already have.
Let me know if any of these ring a bell and I could further substantiate these areas.

Session by Anthony Lim
Today web has become the new business platform and most companies are leveraging on web to conduct their business online. As the volume of business done online increases, it leaves behind trail of insecurity and threat.
Criminals are increasingly targeting Web- Based applications due to the dynamic nature and prevalence of these applications. Anthony Lim in his session during Innovate 2010 Bangalore, stressed upon the risks involved with doing business online and measures that can protect data and client trust.
Giving reference to the IBM X force Midyear trend and risk report, Anthony stated that web application attacks continue to accelerate at a rapid pace and unpreparedness to combat these threats will result in heavy cost.
As these attacks escalate, organisations are forced to take a reactive approach to security with point products that address only pieces of web application security and add to the complexity of security operations.
During his session, he also discussed various application and compliance challenges that organisations face today and gave insight on how to overcome risks and challenges involved with doing business online, while lowering costs.

Session by Jim Zhang
Change has been inevitable since the evolution, and to keep up with the pace we need to drive the change in our process. Today organizations are looking web 2.0 technologies to develop their next generation web applications as well as enhance existing application with rich interactive experiences.
Jim, at Innovate 2010 India, during his session on developing web applications using web 2.0 technologies spoke about various development requirements, choice of technology and tools that can simplify the web development process.
Referring to Rational Application Developer (RAD), Jim said it helps customers to realize the value of good technologies. Developers usually struggle to integrate tools and technologies; RAD as an app developer tool focuses on eliminating this sluggish period, making developers more productive, enabling them to deliver business requirements.
Jim covered various aspects of web 2.0 development including project set up, developing web pages, developing with Dojo and javascript, invoking services to display data, unit testing by publishing to a test server and debugging with firebug.
Listing down the benefits of RAD, Jim said, that this tool helps in building dynamic, scalable, easily manageable, modular applications with support from OSGi.
Session guided by- Devang Parikh
Assessing the requirement is the primary element in any development process. And when developers work towards developing software, a clear sketch of requirement is the first thing they look for. Defining requirements forms the base of software development and in his session, Devang discussed this very point.
Referring to Rational Requirements Composer (RCC), Devang mentioned that it is a great tool to define requirements, as it uses various definition techniques.
RCC helps teams define and use requirements effectively across the project lifecycle for collaborative, fast-paced projects with high stakeholder involvement, having said that Devang also showed how easy it is to manage these requirements using RCC.
While showcasing the process to deploy RCC server in private cloud or in IBM public cloud, Devang also demonstrated how the new capabilities of RCC can be utilized to track the status of requirements and trace the relationship between requirements.
Elaborating on the benefits of RCC Devang said, it engages a wide range of customers and other stakeholders in the requirements process. Uses intuitive storyboards, process diagrams, and other visual and textual techniques to express scenarios and uncover customer needs. Such collaboration between teams at all stages results in fostering agility and predictability through light-weight requirements practice.

” Innovation is a new way of doing something or “new stuff that is made useful”. It may refer to incremental and emergent or radical and revolutionary changes in thinking, products, processes, or organizations. … ”
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Innovate
Innovation is incremental, emergent, radical and revolutionary. It brings about changes in our thought process, how we do things and also what things we do. Its about how we think about engineering, about technology and about automated processes. IBM clearly has set a goal apart and is leading the industry in setting a trail for others to follow. With its sights set on a future that is interconnected, intelligent and also interwoven IBM has already changed the future of technology. IBM Rational brings about a story of Smarter Products and processes that are not only relevant to current businesses but also hold high promise for future generations of products, systems and business in general.
“Innovate” is the cry of today. We are faced with challenges in the multitude yet find ourselves right in the page of history where most innovations will occur and are indeed occurring every day. But here is the catch …, we have been hearing for long how individuals and small players have been able to embrace innovation much more easily than larger organizations. Hang on there, that’s not the full truth. If one is to look at a company the size of IBM (!), it is without doubt that people would be awe-struck at the sheer scale of innovative ideas, technologies and processes that are strengthening the muscles of this company. Innovation is at the heart of IBM’s business strategy and more so at the heart of how it builds its products. Everything
