Implement access restrictions to your EA Artifacts Using Rational System Architect Catalog Manager |
The ever increasing challenges of modern day enterprises demand organization to design of effective Enterprise Architecture (EA) for them to succeed and stay alive in the competition. For EA to be effective, it requires collaboration from many professionals, some of them directly designing/modifying the EA and while others are stakeholders who use the EA to make critical strategic decisions. These decisions in turn define the direction of the organization.
Now in this critical environment where “Visibility” and “Security” form two faces of the same coin, how do you manage effective delivery of EA? While there are many tools which allow creation of EA, IBM Rational System Architect (SA) comes bundled with answers to many more questions than just EA. While Rational System Architect gives you the platform and also forms the tool to design the EA, the Catalog Manager with its “Instance Level” and “Type Level” access Control capabilities complements, completes and addresses the key requirements of “Visibility” and “Security”. There is more that catalog manager helps you with. Rational System Architect also offers a thin client known as System Architect XT (Extended Team) which helps sharing EA through browser. For an encyclopedia that contains EA artifacts to be made accessible by Rational System Architect XT, it must be an Enterprise encyclopedia controlled by Rational System Architect Catalog Manager.
For more demos and sessions on Rational System Architect, be there at Innovate 2011!!!!

Mirtunjay

Application Lifecycle Management Tracks in IBM Rational Innovate 2011 |
The ALM or Application Lifecycle Management Track is a hot one to look forward to in the 2011 edition of the premier software conference – IBM Rational Innovate. The Innovate website says
Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) manages the flow of people, process and information across the software lifecycle. IBM tools, best practices and services are designed to help customers leverage a collaborative, whole-team approach to Application Lifecycle Management. ALM that can help reduces communication inefficiencies, improve delivery time and enhance overall quality. The Rational ALM solution integrates requirements definition and management; modeling, architecture and construction; quality management; change and configuration management; and automation, build and asset management. This stream will showcase a broad variety of ALM disciplines and solutions that are advancing the state-of-the-art of software delivery.
IBM in the past couple of years has spent a considerable amount of time to try and reinvent ALM in ways so that products constituting an ALM solution can interact with each other more seamlessly, without being tied down by each other’s limitations or expectations, and can integrate even if they are from different parties. With Open Services for Lifecycle Management (OSLC) and tools built on an open, extensible Jazz-based architecture, Rational has successfully managed to create a neat ALM solution which we call Collaborative Lifecycle Management (CLM), because it focuses on collaborative development in a team. Rational products – IBM Rational Team Concert, IBM Rational Quality Manager, IBM Rational Asset Manager, IBM Rational Requirements Composer, Rational Insight, Rational Build Forge now all use a jazz based architecture and OSLC services to communicate with the Jazz server. So, not only can all these tools be used seamlessly in a ALM (or CLM as we call it) workbench, but also integrate with other OSLC based tools.
There are several really good talks and demos at IBM Innovate 2011.
On Day 1, we have Shivank Arya talking about
IBM Rational Collaborative Lifecycle Management Solution in ACTION using an implementation example – “Money that Matters”
On Day 2, Pradeep Balachandran talks about
Lifecycle Project Management for IBM Rational Collaborative Lifecycle Management that talks about new administration features for creating and managing lifecycle projects
Also on Day2, you can catch me and Markus Keller from Zurich demoing the Agile development capabilities of Rational Team Concert at the solutions center.
There are many more cool sessions to catch up on. So hurry up and register for Innovate 2011.

Looking forward to Innovate 2011, India |
Innovate is just around the corner and the software community is eagerly waiting to see what’s in store in the 2011 edition of the premier software conference. Not just because I’m a Rational guy, but also because I’m a software developer. As the planet gets smarter, the software and systems involved in even trivial day to day activities such as banking, automobile, traffic management, pollution control, etc. are becoming increasingly complex in both, size and logic. Add to that privacy concerns and scalability issues, and the software developers seem to have their hands full. In this scenario, it becomes increasingly important to have smart tools that make the whole development experience simpler, coherent, and that make intra-team processes easy. Rational tools have matured over the years and some new ones have grown out of incubation phases. All of them aspire to solve the many problems that plague software developers today. At Innovate, we get to see how, and that too, straight from the knowledge experts involved in the making of the product.
The Rational India blog gives a neat roundup of motivating reasons if you’re unsure about attending Innovate. Or if you’re already convinced, you can register on the Innovate website.

CCM Track summary @ Innovate India 2011 |
The premium Software event, Rational Innovate India 2011 kicks-off at Bangalore, Chennai and Delhi in August, 2011. The VoICE event would happen on Aug 9th at Bangalore, followed by Innovate sessions in Bangalore on Aug 10th, 11th, sessions in Delhi on 11th and sessions in Chennai on 12th.
The VoICE event presents a unique opportunity to a select group of customers to meet up with the development organization and discuss about the products, their requirements and pain-areas.
The Change and Configuration management sessions would be the one to watch out for with the track kick-off by Rolf Nelson, Product Manager, IBM Rational Team Concert (RTC). In a separate sessions, Rolf would also talk about what’s new in RTC 3.0.x.
The other topics presented around RTC would be:
- Using IBM Rational Team Concert with other Software Configuration Management Systems – Presenter would talk about how to use RTC with other Software Configuration Management (SCM) systems IBM / non-IBM, like ClearCase, Synergy, Subversion and Git. This would make a lot of sense for customers who would like to keep their existing investments, but would like to reap the benefit of using RTC for its planning or Change Management capabilities.
- Leveraging Rational Team Concert’s build capabilities for Continuous Integration
- Best Practices for Tailoring IBM Rational Team Concert Work Items and Process for Your Environment
- Aligning IT Strategy and Execution with IBM Rational Focal Point and IBM Rational Team Concert
- Bringing Applications Together: Leverage Open Services for Lifecycle Collaboration (OSLC) for integrating 3rd party tools with IBM Rational Jazz – The benefits of moving away from point-to-point integration to an integration using RESTful architecture which would even allow 3rd party tools to integrate with Jazz.
In the other topics being presented in the Change and Configuration Management track, the folks from IBM Rational ClearCase (CC) and IBM Rational ClearQuest (CQ) would talk about what’s new with these products. The session on ClearCase / ClearQuest would be conducted by a senior architect from ClearCase lab in the US and senior developers from the India lab. Some of the topics that would be discussed in this forum would be around CC/CQ support for OSLC, Requirement/ Change Request traceability through CQ / DOORS integration, Dashboard support for CQ, Jazz integration with CC Dynamic Views, Providing codevelopment and verification management solutions for electronic and software design through the integration between CC and Cadence Design Systems.
Do not miss it!

Do you Architect your Enterprise? |
Part 1- What is Enterprise Architecture?
So, for some reason that shall not be discussed – I have started bloggin
Honestly this is a good thing. Writing something down kinda lets you process your thoughts better… so I am glad I did start.
So, I am going to try to articulate (primarily to myself) on what this discipline of Enterprise Architecture (EA) is and how can businesses put it to work in a actionable way. So, if you are passionate about EA, or you think I could use some grown up advice – feel free to leave a comment or send me a personal message
Im planning to do one post per week…..So here goes…….
Enterprise Architecture (EA) is a discipline of describing a Enterprise as a whole in a structured format. Enterprise Architecture is not software architecture – or system architecture – or Service oriented architecture (SOA).
Grady Booch compares EA and Technical Architecture (TA) in one of his blog posts as “EA attends to the architecture of a business that uses technology; TA attends to the architecture of the software-intensive systems that support the business”.
An Enterprise can be a business corporation, a government entity such as a town municipality, or a defense organization like the Army, Navy or Air force of a country. An Enterprise can be composed of
1. Business objectives
2. Targets and goals
3. Business processes
4. People
5. Software applications
6. Computer hardware
7. Networks
8. Business specific assets (War ships, hotel rooms, books, electronic parts etc)
This discipline has existed since the late 1980s. But, 2 decades later, its still nascent in its broader adoption particularly in the commercial world (Other wise I would not need to write this post). The Defense world has been using EA for some time now.
Once the Enterprise is described, various methodologies and tools can be used to analyze the structure of the enterprise, visualize transformation scenarios, depict interconnections and dependencies; pictorially or simply list in a table.
Charts, lists, graphs, drawings, models are artifacts of an Enterprise Architecture exercise. Enterprise Architecture is not modeling in itself. These artifacts put together can “describe” an enterprise and help in understand and communicate business impact in transformation scenarios. It also serves to build a search-able inventory of business aspects (business divisions, work groups, business applications, business processes, business services, machines etc)
BTW – I will be probably be talking about this at Innovate Bangalore – so if you want to participate in this discussion be at Innovate Bangalore 2011 where you will also see the new version of IBM Rational System Architect in action – this is a EA tool that IBM offers.
